1970-2010 Black and White Photography
Celebrate 40th Anniversary of Dacotah Prairie Museum

A new exhibit entitled: 1970-2010: Black and White Photography, is now open at the Dacotah Prairie Museum until April 10, 2010. It features vintage photographs from 1970 and compliments them with the current photographic work of Dr. William Hoar. The idea for the display originated with thoughts of how to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Museum in its present building. The Anniversary year seemed to invite reflection on the year 1970, the first year the Museum of Brown County had a permanent home on Main Street in Aberdeen.
Last fall, the idea of incorporating some 1970s photos from the Museum’s collection with some very recent photographs in the same venues, was decided on. Dr. Hoar, a long-time Art Professor from Northern State University, was approached to shoot the latter set of pictures. He was happy to take on the project and spent about 4-5 months capturing documentations of locales and people at work and play. Each of Hoar’s photos expose us to the creativity and artistry of the moment that the image was captured.
From the shaggy hairstyles of 1970 to the short cut or shaved head look of 2010, from John Denver performing at Gypsy Days in the 1970s to Lorie Line’s piano extravaganza of 2010, times have changed. From cars to football games, parades to technology, from theater to clothing, what a difference 40 years make! The comparisons of photographs are humorous, entertaining and poignant.
On display in 2nd floor’s Dacotah Gallery, the exhibit is shown against a backdrop of bright 1970s wall graphics to set the mood. The exhibit continues all the way to the east wall of the Museum, containing 50 black/white photographs in all. Please join the Museum in celebrating 40 years at 21 South Main Street in Aberdeen with this unique photography exhibition.
